8/21/2008 Steven Jackson, RB (StL) Jackson ended his holdout on Wednesday while his agent continues negotiations for a new contract. Jackson is scheduled for a physical Thursday morning and could make it onto the practice field that day.

Analysis: Jackson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he had agreed "in principle" to terms of a deal. He added that once a few details were ironed out, "We'll be pretty much done." Jackson, the centerpiece of the team's offense, is entering the final year of a five-year, $7 million deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004. His prolonged stand perhaps reflected a realization of his value to an attack that averaged only 16 points last season while going 3-13.
8/20/2008 Antonio Gates, TE (SD) Gates didn't practice Wednesday, one day after passing a physical and being taken off the physically unable to perform list.

Analysis: Gates, a Pro Bowler, had surgery six months ago to repair a tear in the plantar plate of his left foot. "Obviously, this injury is one of those things you have to kind of handle daily," Gates said. "I continue to monitor it because ideally I want to be at full strength come the opener." The Chargers open the regular season Sept. 7 against Carolina.
8/20/2008 Shawne Merriman, LB (SD) Merriman had his knee examined Wednesday in Alabama after lingering soreness kept him out of practice for more than a week.

Analysis: Merriman had surgery to repair cartilage damage five months ago but has had persistent pain in the knee during training camp. He traveled to Birmingham to have the knee looked at by Dr. James Andrews, the surgeon who performed the operation. Merriman hasn't practiced this week and missed a preseason loss to St. Louis on Saturday. Chargers coach Norv Turner said he's still hopeful Merriman will be ready for the Sept. 7 regular-season opener.
8/20/2008 Anthony Spencer, LB (Dal) Spencer had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Wednesday and is expected to be out two-to-four weeks.

Analysis: Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said Spencer's knee "kept getting irritated" every time the linebacker tried to get back on the field. Spencer played in all 16 games as a rookie in 2007, including six starts, and recorded 20 tackles, 3.0 sacks and one forced fumble. The Cowboys were already without nickel linebacker Kevin Burnett, who had surgery on his left knee last week.
8/20/2008 Adam Jones, CB (Dal) Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said Wednesday night, after the team held an open practice before more than 20,000 fans at Texas Stadium, that Jones will start at left corner Friday in the Cowboys' preseason home opener against Houston.

Analysis: Jones, who missed the 2007 season while serving an NFL suspension and has not yet been reinstated for the regular season, has been working primarily on the right side behind Anthony Henry. But Phillips said Jones "has shown he can play. He needs to play some more."
8/20/2008 Willie McGinest, LB (Cle) McGinest did not practice Wednesday and isn't expected to play against the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Analysis: McGinest was sidelined with a groin injury he suffered in Monday's 37-34 preseason loss to the New York Giants. He is expected to be ready for the season opener Sept. 7 against Dallas.
8/20/2008 Brodney Pool, S (Cle) Pool did not practice Wednesday and isn't expected to play against the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Analysis: Pool was sidelined with a concussion he suffered in Monday's 37-34 preseason loss to the New York Giants. He is expected to be ready for the season opener Sept. 7 against Dallas.
8/20/2008 Joshua Cribbs, WR (Cle) Cribbs did not practice Wednesday and isn't expected to play against the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Analysis: Cribbs was sidelined with an ankle injury he suffered in Monday's 37-34 preseason loss to the New York Giants. He is expected to be ready for the season opener Sept. 7 against Dallas.
8/20/2008 Braylon Edwards, WR (Cle) Edwards did not practice Wednesday and isn't expected to play against the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Analysis: Edwards, sidelined nearly two weeks with a cut on his right foot, is expected to be ready for the season opener Sept. 7 against Dallas.
8/20/2008 Jamal Lewis, RB (Cle) Lewis did not practice Wednesday and isn't expected to play against the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Analysis: Lewis was sidelined with a hamstring injury he suffered in Monday's 37-34 preseason loss to the New York Giants. He is expected to be ready for the season opener Sept. 7 against Dallas.
8/20/2008 Derek Anderson, QB (Cle) Anderson and five teammates did not practice on Wednesday and weren't expected to play against the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Analysis: Anderson was out with a concussion he suffered when Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora sacked him early in the second quarter of Monday's 37-34 loss to the New York Giants. Anderson didn't visit the Browns practice field Wednesday and hasn't talked to reporters since the game.
8/20/2008 Terence Newman, CB (Dal) Newman is expected to be back in time for the Sept. 7 season opener, and maybe even the final preseason game next week.

Analysis: Rookie Mike Jenkins has been getting extra snaps and starting preseason games, but will return to a secondary role when Newman is healthy.
8/20/2008 Mike Jenkins, CB (Dal) Jenkins has been getting extra snaps and starting preseason games while Pro Bowler Terence Newman is sidelined by a groin injury.

Analysis: Jenkins, the second of the Cowboys' two first-round picks, says Newman has helped him adjust to the professional game. "He's been a lot of help to me, ever since he went down," Jenkins said. "He's definitely on my back all the time. ... It's starting to get annoying. He's in my ear more than (secondary coach Dave) Campo, more than the coach." Newman is expected to be back in time for the Sept. 7 season opener, and maybe even the final preseason game next week.
8/20/2008 Kevin Curtis, WR (Phi) Curtis will have surgery Thursday to repair a sports hernia and will likely miss the start of the regular season.

Analysis: Eagles coach Andy Reid believes Curtis, the team's top receiver last season, will be back during the regular season, but no timetable has been set for his return.
8/20/2008 Demorrio Williams, LB (KC) Williams will likely miss the final two Kansas City Chiefs preseason games with a broken bone in his right hand, but expects to be ready for the Sept. 7 opener at New England.

Analysis: Williams, a free agent who signed a five-year contract in March, suffered the injury in practice Tuesday, but did not learn of the severity until a cast was placed on the hand later. From what doctors told him, Williams said, he'll miss Saturday's game at Miami and probably the Aug. 28 preseason game with St. Louis.
8/20/2008 Tom Nalen, C (Den) Nalen is headed back to the operating table. The only player left from the Denver Broncos' Super Bowl teams of the late 1990s, Nalen needs another operation on his left knee after surgery in June failed to put him back on the field without pain.

Analysis: The 37-year-old Nalen will undergo another arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Thursday, said coach Mike Shanahan, who is holding out hope that his center will be ready for the season opener at Oakland on Sept. 8. The 15-year veteran whose 2007 season was cut short by a torn right biceps after five games missed most of training camp before returning to practice on a limited basis last week.
8/20/2008 Matt Hasselbeck, QB (Sea) Hasselbeck missed another day of practice because of a stiff back on Wednesday, and may also not play his second consecutive preseason game against San Diego.

Analysis: Coach Mike Holmgren said after Wednesday morning's drills that No. 3 quarterback Charlie Frye will likely get the bulk of playing time on Monday against the Chargers because Hasselbeck's back remains tight and sore. Hasselbeck first felt his back tighten while looking sharp in the first two series of the preseason opener Aug. 8 at Minnesota.
8/20/2008 Trent Edwards, QB (Buf) Edwards has a swollen bruise above his right kneecap, which forced him to miss practice Wednesday, a day after the Buffalo Bills starter knocked knees in a collision with running back Marshawn Lynch.

Analysis: Walking with a noticeable limp, Edwards was relieved the injury to his lower right quadriceps wasn't as severe as he initially feared, but added he's not sure whether he'll play in Buffalo's third preseason game at Indianapolis on Sunday. Except for the swelling, Edwards said he's been informed that there is nothing structurally wrong with his leg or knee. It's a relief for Edwards after he went down early in practice Tuesday.
8/20/2008 Ian Scott, DT (Car) The Carolina Panthers released injured defensive tackle Ian Scott on Wednesday.

Analysis: Scott, who signed in the offseason to provide depth after Carolina traded three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kris Jenkins to the New York Jets, sprained his left knee on the fifth day of training camp. Scott missed all of last season in Philadelphia with a knee injury.
