Analysis: The right-hander will be available for the Rockies' game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night. Speier is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA in 30 games for Colorado so far in 2008.
8/20/2008 Matt Herges, RP (Col) The Rockies placed Herges on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of lower back stiffness. The move was retroactive to Aug. 18.

Analysis: Herges, a right-hander, was 3-4 with an ERA of 5.09 this season.
8/20/2008 Tom Glavine, SP (Atl) Glavine was examined Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews in Alabama. As expected, tests showed the 42-year-old pitcher has a partial tear in the flexor tendon in his left elbow - but no ligament damage.

Analysis: The 300-game winner will have surgery Thursday, performed by Andrews, to repair the tendon and is expected to face four to five months of rehabilitation. That leaves open the possibility Glavine could return next season. The left-hander had said he'd retire if he needed elbow ligament replacement surgery because the "Tommy John" procedure often requires at least a year of rehab. But, if Glavine is to come back next season, he only wants to pitch for Atlanta.
8/20/2008 Mitch Maier, LF (KC) Maier was hit in the face by a pitch from Cleveland Indians left-hander Zach Jackson and left the game in the fifth inning Wednesday night.

Analysis: Royals manager Trey Hillman and team trainers quickly came out to check on Maier. After a few minutes, he walked off field holding a towel to his bloody nose. Maier, who came in hitting .345 (19-for-55) in 18 games since being recalled from Triple-A Omaha, was replaced by pinch-runner Mark Teahen.
8/20/2008 Al Reyes, RP (NYM) The Mets agreed with Reyes on a minor league contract Wednesday.

Analysis: Reyes closed games for Tampa Bay last year, earning a career-high 26 saves in 30 chances. He was 2-4 with a 4.90 ERA in 61 appearances. Reyes went 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA in 26 outings before the Rays designated him for assignment Aug. 9. He was released on Monday after rejecting a minor league assignment. New York sent Reyes to Double-A Binghamton and likely will bring him to the majors when rosters expand on Sept. 1.
8/20/2008 Kam Mickolio, RP (Bal) The Baltimore Orioles filled out their bullpen Wednesday, replacing injured closer George Sherrill by purchasing the contract of right-hander Mickolio from Triple-A Norfolk.

Analysis: The 24-year-old Mickolio was obtained in the February trade that sent pitcher Erik Bedard to the Seattle Mariners. He had a 1.50 ERA with two saves in 15 games at Norfolk after being promoted from Double-A Bowie on July 7.
8/20/2008 Josh Beckett, SP (Bos) Beckett remains on course to start for the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, although manager Terry Francona won't be overly disappointed if the right-hander gets pushed back again.

Analysis: Beckett's next start was moved from Saturday to Tuesday after he developed a sore right elbow that created numbness in his hand.
8/20/2008 Sean Gallagher, SP (Oak) Gallagher has a tired right arm and will skip his next scheduled start for the Oakland Athletics.

Analysis: Gallagher had irritation in his right shoulder that caused him to miss a start earlier this month, but he said he after Tuesday's loss this fatigue is unrelated and that he has no pain.
8/20/2008 Adam Wainwright, SP (StL) The St. Louis Cardinals decided to plug Wainwright into their rotation instead of as the fill-in closer, and will give him a start on Friday against the Atlanta Braves.

Analysis: Wainwright, the opening-day starter, has been on the 15-day disabled list since early June with a ruptured tendon on the middle finger of his right hand. He threw 4 2-3 scoreless innings in his third rehab start last week and on Monday said he was ready to pitch in the majors. Wainwright bumps Joel Pineiro, who had been on track to make the start on Friday.
8/20/2008 Luke Hochevar, SP (KC) The Kansas City Royals placed Hochevar on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of a rib injury.

Analysis: The 24-year-old had an MRI, which showed a right rib contusion. Left-hander Josh Newman was recalled from Triple-A Omaha to replace Hochevar.
8/20/2008 Pedro Feliz, 3B (Phi) The Philadelphia Phillies activated Feliz from the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday.

Analysis: Feliz, who was battling a bulging disk in his lower back, was placed on the disabled list on July 29. He was sent on a rehabilitation assignment on Sunday, and hit two home runs that day for Double-A Reading.
8/20/2008 Anderson Hernandez, 2B (Was) The Washington Nationals acquired shortstop Anderson Hernandez from New York on Wednesday, completing Sunday's trade that sent right-hander Luis Ayala to the Mets.

To make room on the roster, the Twins outrighted reliever Brian Bass to Triple-A Rochester.

Analysis: Casilla played two games in a rehab assignment with Class-A Beloit, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI on Tuesday night. He has been on the DL since July 29 with a torn ligament in his right thumb.
8/20/2008 Dewayne Wise, CF (CWS) Wise left Wednesday's game against the Seattle Mariners after straining a muscle near his groin.

Analysis: Wise was replaced by Brian Anderson in the top of the fifth. Wise was a late addition to the lineup after Jim Thome was scratched due to slight soreness in his right leg.
8/20/2008 Jerry Hairston Jr., SS (Cin) Hairston went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained right hamstring, costing the Cincinnati Reds one of their most effective leadoff hitters.

Analysis: The Reds called up infielder Adam Rosales from Triple-A Louisville to take Hairston's roster spot. Hairston was on the disabled list from July 17 to Aug. 1 with a pulled hamstring. He aggravated it in his first game back, and it has bothered him since.
8/20/2008 Hideki Matsui, DH (NYY) Matsui was activated from the disabled list Tuesday and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in a 2-1 loss at Toronto.

Analysis: Matsui had been sidelined for nearly two months with a swollen left knee. It may take the left fielder some time to adjust to being back in the lineup. Despite that, his return should be a lift for the Yankees.

Analysis: Olivo had been suspended for five games for causing trouble in a win against Chicago on Aug. 3. He was hit by a pitch from White Sox reliever D.J. Carrasco and charged the mound, starting a bench-clearing brawl.

Analysis: Bedard is struggling with left shoulder stiffness, and has been on the disabled list since July 10. The Mariners are being very cautious with the left-hander since their season has been a major disappointment.
8/20/2008 Scott Downs, RP (Tor) Downs was available to pitch in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the New York Yankees, according to the Toronto Star.

Analysis: Downs has been hampered by a sprained right ankle, but appears to be returning soon. The injury hasn't been serious enough to warrant a move to the disabled list.
