Scouting Report
Mullens is a Columbus native who played at Ohio State for one season before declaring for the NBA draft. He averaged 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds, and shot 64 percent from the field to set a school freshman record in 2008-09. Mullens started two of 33 games this past season for the Buckeyes, who lost to Siena in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The big man never logged 30 minutes in a game, and only fouled out once. Mullens' decision was expected by the Buckeyes since he had a turbulent childhood and lived for a time in a homeless shelter. He is a true 7-footer who has been working out in Las Vegas under Joe Abunassar in a facility used by NBA stars Chauncey Billups and Kevin Garnett in their offseasons. Because of his size, Mullens is an excellent finisher around the basket. He has no passing ability whatsoever with nine assists on the year in 671 minutes. Mullens clearly needs to develop more moves when posting up since his game right now mostly revolves around easy baskets. There is clearly plenty of upside for Mullens because he is only 20 years old and does not have refined skills yet - something that is very coachable if Mullens is receptive. He also wasn't that effective as a shot blocker with 1.1 per game, mostly due to his lack of mobility. Mullens has physical tools that could land him in the mid-to-late first round, but a team selecting him will need to be very patient.
